Painting Stained Wood

While stained wood can be an attractive compliment to any room, it can often have the effect of making the room seem small and dark. Often, painting stained woodwork can brighten a room.

Properly preparing the woodwork is imperative if the final appearance is to be attractive.

Most stained woodwork has a clear coating— most commonly varnish, lacquer, or polyurethane— on the surface to protect both the stain and the wood.

This clear coating must be deglossed with sandpaper to improve the adhesion of the subsequent coatings.

A minimum of one coat of oil based primer should be applied to all surfaces. The primer will prevent the stain from bleeding through the paint, as well as improve adhesion.

Darker stains may require two coats of primer to prevent bleeding. A light sanding will remove any imperfections in the primer.

The primer will also expose small separations between pieces of wood. On stained wood, such separations are generally not filled, as they are not noticeable.

However, when painted, those separations will appear as unattractive, hairline cracks. After the primer has dried, these separations should be neatly caulked.

Because of the multiple applications of coatings required, this process is most efficient when performed by spraying. However, in occupied homes, this may not be practical.

Appliances, floors, furniture, and other items must be masked, and often must remain so for several days, making the area inaccessible.

In addition, spraying will increase the level of fumes, which can be irritating as well as dangerous.
